Songs that almost made it but but didn't for one reason or another! But I was too fond of them to excise them completely, so have at them:

bonus tracks

Jake Miller - Rumors || lyrics

We like stars, yeah baby, they astronomers
Look at everybody camping out with they binoculars
All up in the headlines, me and the wifey
But let them gossip girl, Blake Lively

Another hat tip to LLDFest2K22 without which I'd never have found out about this song. Remember those few glorious months where it felt like the whole fandom was wilding over some new piece of junzhe candy? Hangzhou? Haikou? HEXAGONS? Man, I really miss those times. I cut this because it didn't really fit the sonic mood of the latter half of Disc One, but AREN'T THE LYRICS PERFECT?!?!?!

Hellogoodbye - Here (In Your Arms)
|| lyrics

I like where you sleep
When you sleep next to me
I like where you sleep here
Our lips can touch
And our cheeks can brush
'Cause our lips can touch here
Well, you are the one, the one that lies close to me
Whispers, "Hello. I've missed you quite terribly."
I fell in love, in love with you suddenly
Now there's no place else I could be but here in your arms

I don't like repeating artists in one mix, so "Baby It's Fact" won over this one. But it really works as another One Night in Nanjing call.

The Mountain Goats - Maybe Sprout Wings
|| lyrics

I clawed my way to the living room window, stood there in the cold
The last bits of my dream like figures in the distance, hard to hold
I thought of old friends, the ones who'd gone missing
Said all their names three times, phantoms in the early dark
Canaries in the mines

John Darnielle's misery made manifest is absolutely hauntingly perfect for (how I picture) GJ post-813, but I couldn't really justify so many downer tracks in a row.

Radiohead - 4 Minute Warning
|| lyrics

I don't wanna hear it
I don't wanna know
I just wanna run and hide
This is just a nightmare
But soon I'm gonna wake up
Someone's gonna bring me 'round

Another cut track from Disc Two. Lyrically it was perfect; sonically I thought it was just a bit too monotonous.

Massive Attack - Safe From Harm || lyrics

Midnight rockers
City slickers
Gunmen and maniacs
All will feature on the freakshow
And I can't do nothing 'bout that, no
But if you hurt what's mine
I'll sure as hell retaliate
You can free the world you can free my mind
Just as long as my baby's safe from harm tonight

This was going to be the original "weird, trippy and menacing" track for post-813 as a soundtrack for everyone in their coffins. "Sit Down, Stand Out" just narrowly beat it out because I thought the political allusions were more apt.
